Healing Regrets – Talk with Rick Hanson
Regret can be a heavy burden. As we reflect on our own mistakes and regrets, it is essential to explore the underlying good intent behind our actions.
When our loving intentions are met with discontent, we can sometimes become driven and insistent, which can be problematic. To avoid these pitfalls, it is helpful to pause and recenter ourselves in the present moment, feeling content and at ease. Through this sense of contentment, we can move forward with our good intentions without being driven by discontent or craving.
This is the process of Healing Regrets - which is what Dr. Rick Hanson covered in his Wednesday Meditation and Talk from June 12.

From Autonomic to Volitional Attention - talk with Sean Oakes

At the heart of meditation is the work of retraining our attention. Because attention is in service to the autonomic nervous system, which is devoted to keeping our body safe, it habitually scans the environment for danger. Hi Rick, I love ur content, but just a mindful note, unfortunately the amount of narcissists and psychopaths is much larger than has been studied as we all agree they typically don’t come to therapy and can also be quite crafty at hiding it. For survivors like me, that had a full family and have come across many narcissistic people, it makes us feel marginalized to think that we are only interacting with 10% of the population. I’ve studied about it, and sadly there are a lot of them out there. Especially in America, look at our last president. I’ve had a history of therapists mimimizing my soul crushing experience by instantly going to talking about “healthy narcissism” which in my opinion is not a thing… you being extremely articulate, im sure can understand there are so many other terms for self esteem, self protection, self compassion etc. The continual reference that the world and people for the most part are safe makes me and others whom have had many experiences with these types feel shame.. as if it must be me… and im living on the outskirts. With love and gratitude ❤ also always open to your feedback. I’d love to live in a “safe” world, but denial about how many people are has kept me just bringing in new ones…

    Thank you for pointing out the complicated dynamics at play when in the mental health, mindfulness, and social justice realms someone points a finger and says, "I feel hurt, therefore you hurt me." I've needed to hear/see this addressed for some time. /\

    I have no compassion because I don't have emotions. At least not the ones you want to have. This includes compassion for myself. I missed the "How" part of your video. I got the 'you can become compassionate by little steps' part. After that all you said is to be more compassionate. That is not exactly a how to and does not address how to start from zero. I guess because of your personal experience you can't imagine someone who does not have access to compassion because you are the opposite.

    This is such a slippery slope for me… Being CPTSD, I keep venturing out, so hyper vigilant to find healthy people, and I’m continually encountering it. I’m meeting others that seem “normal” but they just don’t reciprocate… it’s so hard because I take a risk… and had 3 big disappointments over the past year, trauma with a therapist… I know i can’t generalize all people, and when I start building that confidence it just feels like shock after shock. 😞 I hope that the next time I soothe in I find someone with a kind heart.. can feel like there’s no one empathic like me that is available for new relationships. ❤️‍🩹

    I disagree with the advice to the guy going through the run around at the pharmacy to "change his story," For me, I would need to allow and feel frustration (Anger/fight response) in the body and acknowledge that is frustrating to have to do 20 things and all those mishaps just to get his inhaler. It takes a minute to acknowledge our feelings and go into the body and feel the fight response (make a fist and feel and say "I am angry, frustrated or whatever," better than trying to create a new story, fighting thoughts etc. I feel like her advice was almost spiritual bypassing.

    • @Alphacentauri819
      @Alphacentauri819 21 день тому

      I hear what you are saying, but largely she was reflecting back what he himself said. She did acknowledge the situation and also encouraged the larger view…that’s a significant aspect of non-duality. It is holding space for all of it, not either/or. I didn’t feel she was encouraging spiritual bypassing…although I could see how someone might infer as much. Take a listen again, with an open mind to what she says & maybe what he also said. He dismissed his own experience a bit, I did notice that. However, we can be frustrated and hold the larger picture, if we aren’t overwhelmed by the cognitive dissonance of it all. I agree very much with the admitting and fully feeling how we feel. We do need to be cautious about not letting that become the stopping point, or patterned way, however. Often, people get hooked by their sympathetic nervous system (the neurotransmitters released can be an addictive “go to” unconsciously) and keep riding that bus. The more we see the survival reaction, in an observer way, the quicker we can detach from any subsequent stories & further biochemical releases (and the neuroplastic pattens that can become further entrenched).

    I love talks and building mindfulness/attention but I feel in every talk about the mind, the importance of being in the body and feeling the emotions and sensations with a sense of safety needs to be mentioned. I did so much with working on my mind only to not get very far until I then learned to feel my feelings (I was emotionally repressed since childhood) and learned to be in my body and feeling and be ok with all emotions and sensations). Doing all this work I healed from lifelong depression and anxiety issues, chronic pain and more. For me working with the mind has been very important, but nothing really worked until I started working with the body also (Somatic Experiencing, ISDTP, IFS).

    My every morning meditation. Two things that have helped me enormously: Chanelling my empathy and people pleasing crazy drive towards people i dont know vs those i do who throw my love back at my face. Make baby blankies for goodwill. People have started donating wool when they knew what i did. Like you said, keeping a log or even google calendar of things that would nurture me to keep me healthy, wealthy and wise. When your google calender starts to remind you of these things you actually start to believe someone cares for you...albeit some minor annoyances like procrastination, ....you. you see yourself as someone worthy of love. Hope this helps.😊

    Thank you for this talk, Sujatha. So sorry to hear what you have gone through. You are such a great source of inspiration for others who have gone through or are going through similar experiences. The work you do is very representative of the value of forgiveness that you have shared your insights on. As you have said, there is no black and white way of viewing anger. Anger is an emotion like others that provides useful information. It can be a tool, so long as the energy is harnessed towards a goal, for example, achieving social justice. But anger that is left untended can grow into something much worse. In many cases, the anger towards the perpetrator does not affect the perpetrator as much as it does the victim. So it becomes like the "double darts" that Rick often mentions about: not only are you already hurt because of what you have experienced, but you end up hurting yourself even more. Forgiveness is the only way to move forward in such circumstances. The key thing to take note of though is that forgiveness is not an invitation to "sweep your anger under the rug". That goes into the realm of "toxic positivity", which can also do more harm than good. Rather, forgiveness stems from the knowledge that anger can't be the long term solution. It takes a lot of work to get to that state of mind. I'm glad that you have reached a point where you can be calm even as you fight for justice and are inspiring others to do the same.
